From a height of 83 metres (272 feet), which is one and a half times higher than Niagara Falls, 35,000 litres of water cascade down the Chute-Montmorency (Montmorency Falls) each second. A cablecar system, bridges, belvederes and hiking/cycling/snowshoeing trails have been installed to allow visitors to see the falls from different angles. At the top of the cablecar line, the Manoir Montmorency offers fine dining, gift shops and meeting facilities. In winter, ice climbing and tobogganing are popular. The large bullrush marshes of Cap Tourmente draw over 300 species of birds to the site. Every spring and fall, thousands of Greater Snow Geese stop in this wildlife area as they travel between their southern wintering grounds and their northern breeding grounds. Other birds commonly seen include the Great Grey Owl, the Peregrine Falcon and the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. Domaine Maizerets Located on one of New-France’s first concessions, domaine Maizerets is both a historic site and a vast landscape garden. This city-owned site offers cultural and educational exhibitions, tours of the floral gardens and the arboretum, concerts at the chau Maizerets and walking paths through the grounds. It is also the departure point of two major cycling trails, Corridor des Cheminots and Corridor du Littoral. Chutes-de-la-Chaudiere Park The 35 m (115 ft) high Chaudiere waterfalls are the highlight of this conservation and interpretation park. The falls can be seen from a number of lookout points located throughout the park as well as from a footbridge suspended over the river. This property, which was called Spencer Wood in the early 19th century, became a showcase for horticulture through the efforts of its owner, Henry Atkinson. For nearly 20 years, the governors-general of Canada lived on the property, which was purchased by the Québec government in 1870 and served as the residence of Québec lieutenant-governors until 1966.
