The quaint village of Ste-Anne-de-Beaupre exudes the sweet simple charm of yesteryear.
Located at the junction of the St.
Lawrence and the Sainte
Anne River, the tiny settlement is only 35 km (22 mi) northeast of Quebec
City. Ste-Anne-de-Beaupre is considered a major Roman Catholic place of pilgrimage
and over a million people visit yearly to experience the main attraction, the
spectacular Basilica
of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre. The church is known around the world for its healing
powers and tremendous architecture. In fact, the church's entrance is framed by
two pillars which hold racks of crutches, canes and braces, supposedly left behind
by pilgrims cured by the basilica's powers. The grand building encompasses a chapel,
museum, store and offers guided tours. Items purchased in the gift shop can also
be blessed at the basilica. A short 6 km (4 mi) drive east of the village lies
the Canyon
Sainte-Anne, a steep sided gorge with an 80 m (262 ft) drop waterfall within
the canyon. Spectacular views via three bridges are some factors that attract
over 100,000 visitors to the site each year. Within the vicinity, visitors can
enjoy a souvenir shop, restaurant, picnic areas and interpretive sites. The surrounding
forest contains mythical characters carved in stone.
